Spring is the time to start thinking about getting your air conditioner ready for the coming summer months. At Nicholson Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning, we recommend having your cooling system tuned up each year, but we understand why many of our customers are hesitant when it comes to spending money fixing something that does not appear to be broken.
If you’re wondering, “Do I really need an air conditioning tune-up,” the answer is yes. Here are just a few reasons why.
You might think about skipping maintenance to save money, but it could cost you in the long run. Keeping up with basic maintenance keeps a lot of major problems at bay and helps you avoid costly repairs and emergency service. Keeping your air conditioner properly tuned up also keeps it running at peak efficiency, reducing your monthly energy bills.
Chances are, it has been several months since the last time you cranked up your air conditioner. If you’ve ever noticed a musty or burning odor when turning your AC on for the first time of the season, you’ve smelled all the debris that collected on your air conditioner’s coils during the winter months. In addition to causing an unpleasant odor, using your cooling system without removing the dirt and debris could affect performance and efficiency.
When your cooling system is not in use, electrical problems and refrigerant leaks can also develop. Having the system inspected prior to using it for the first time each season ensures that all any problems will be detected before they can cause serious damage.
If you do not want to have to replace your home’s cooling system anytime soon, you need to have it tuned up from time to time. Just like your car requires routine oil changes, tire rotations, etc. to keep it running like the day you brought it home, your air conditioner requires maintenance to prevent system failure.
Annual air conditioner tune-ups are the best way to increase your cooling system’s lifespan. An annual tune-up also provides an opportunity for you to learn when your system may be due to be replaced soon. Learn about our Comfort Protection Service Plans.

Francis from Nicholson Plumbing and Heating was excellent. He was here to evaluate HVAC in our home. He was very patient and answered all my questions. He is also polite and easy to communicate with him. He explained technical concepts to me in layperson terms!

Nicholson offered what is possibly the best customer service I have dealt with in a home repair situation. I called them because I was looking to replace my very old furnace. They came out to do an initial estimate, and then came back when I had some further questions about my options. After installing the furnace, they ran into some problems with my air ducts. This happened on a Friday, and the problem was fixed by Monday afternoon. In addition to their excellent service, they did quality work at a fair price. I would recommend them to anyone looking for an HVAC company in the Framingham area!

Recently used these guys because my HVAC unit AC wasn’t working (first hot day of summer). Showed up on time, wore booties, fixed the unit. During the visit we talked about how my unit was having problems in the winter – which was resulting in NSTAR service calls of maybe 3-4 times per season (I am on a service plan with them). He was the first guy to tell me WHY the problem was happening, and HOW to fix it. I find it strange that all of the NSTAR guys etc. no one took time to point out how to fix the source of the problem…Very professional, smart. I would use them again, and plan to for the fix on my heating unit!
