MetroWest Company Offers Tips on How to Avoid Costly Boiler Failure Before Winter Hits

Nicholson Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning encourages preventative tune-ups that will save Massachusetts residents time and money as school year gets underway

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – Sep. 13, 2018 – Nicholson Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning, a family-owned home service company and recipient of the Angie’s List Super Service Award for the eighth year in a row, is urging MetroWest homeowners to consider early furnace tune-ups before the weather turns colder.

It’s estimated the 40 percent of boilers that fail during winter do so the first day the temperatures drop below freezing.

“While falling temperatures might mean extra layers for Massachusetts residents, they also mean home furnaces are more likely to fail, putting uninsulated plumbing and pipes at risk for bursting,” said Mike Nicholson, owner of Nicholson Plumbing, Heating, & Air Conditioning. “This is actually a really good time to start thinking about tune-ups. With kids back in school, it makes it easier to schedule appointments and routine maintenance. Freezing temperatures are still a couple of months away, but a lot of devastating damage can happen to an improperly heated home. ”

In fact, Nicholson says extreme temperatures can lead to a furnace experiencing a major problem, such as a carbon monoxide leak or even a complete failure.

According to Nicholson Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning, homeowners should consider early tune-ups for the following reasons:

—      Prolong the life of your furnace — Regular maintenance can keep your furnace working at maximum efficiency and actually lengthen the life of the equipment. Many homeowners might not know skipping annual maintenance can often void a manufacturer’s warranty.

—      Prevent frozen pipes — It’s not unusual for homeowners to lower the thermostat while they’re away from home. However, Nicholson recommends MetroWest residents maintain a regular temperature — around 65 — in their home to avoid bursting or frozen pipes.

—      Stay safe — Most furnaces are gas-burning, which produces carbon dioxide. A leak could prove dangerous, or even fatal. During routine maintenance, a technician will take preventative measures to ensure this can’t happen, such as changing the filter and giving the furnace a thorough cleaning.

“A lot of homeowners have good intentions when it comes to scheduling maintenance,” Nicholson said. “The problem is that it’s easy to forget things like tune-ups when your equipment is still operating correctly. It only becomes an issue when something breaks or fails, and our goal is to help local residents avoid costly and inconvenient damage or repairs. The last thing anyone wants is to be without heat when the temperatures are below freezing.”
