There are few things as frustrating as a problem with your furnace in the middle of winter.
But before you put all the blame on your furnace, you can do some simple troubleshooting to see if your thermostat is the real culprit.
We recommend you check this first, because it is the easiest.
If you have a digital thermostat, it has batteries. Some digital thermostats are hard wired and the batteries are only to save the “program” when the power goes out in your home.
However, on many newer digital thermostats, the battery provides all of the power. That means if the battery goes out, your furnace will not work.
Just like everything else in your home, your thermostat can collect dust.
A collection of dust inside your thermostat can cause it to malfunction. Fortunately, this thermostat problem is easy to fix.
Another thermostat problem that can cause your furnace to malfunction is loose wiring.
With your thermostat’s cover removed, tighten any of the screw terminals that may be loose. If a wire has come away from its terminal, replace it and tighten it.
If you are unsure of where the wires should be in your thermostat, consult your owner’s manual or call a trusted HVAC professional.
If your furnace is turning on and off frequently (known as short cycling), your thermostat could be in a bad position in your home.
For example, if your thermostat is near a vent, the heat from the vent may cause it to register a higher temperature, which will shut off your furnace prematurely.
You may experience a similar problem if your thermostat is near a window or heat source (like an oven, stove, etc.)
If you’ve gone through this quick checklist of common thermostat problems and your furnace is still not quite working correctly, you may need to call in a reliable heating company.

Francis from Nicholson Plumbing and Heating was excellent. He was here to evaluate HVAC in our home. He was very patient and answered all my questions. He is also polite and easy to communicate with him. He explained technical concepts to me in layperson terms!

Nicholson offered what is possibly the best customer service I have dealt with in a home repair situation. I called them because I was looking to replace my very old furnace. They came out to do an initial estimate, and then came back when I had some further questions about my options. After installing the furnace, they ran into some problems with my air ducts. This happened on a Friday, and the problem was fixed by Monday afternoon. In addition to their excellent service, they did quality work at a fair price. I would recommend them to anyone looking for an HVAC company in the Framingham area!

Recently used these guys because my HVAC unit AC wasn’t working (first hot day of summer). Showed up on time, wore booties, fixed the unit. During the visit we talked about how my unit was having problems in the winter – which was resulting in NSTAR service calls of maybe 3-4 times per season (I am on a service plan with them). He was the first guy to tell me WHY the problem was happening, and HOW to fix it. I find it strange that all of the NSTAR guys etc. no one took time to point out how to fix the source of the problem…Very professional, smart. I would use them again, and plan to for the fix on my heating unit!
