Well, it may. But don’t jump the gun. Your problem may be caused by something simple you can actually fix.
Fixing these simple problems can save you the cost of a service visit.
Do these 3 troubleshooting tasks before calling an AC service person for help.
1) Check your thermostat settings
Make sure that your thermostat is not:
- Set too high
- Set on heat by accident
2) Check the air filter
Is the air coming out of your supply vents very weak? You may have a dirty air filter.
Why would that prevent your AC from cooling your home?
Well, your air conditioner doesn’t just create cold air; it recycles the warm air from your home and cools it off.
But before the air is cooled by the AC, it has to go through the air filter. If it’s dirty, the air has difficulty passing through to be recycled into your home.
Change the air filter if it’s dirty.
3) Clean the outside unit
Your AC is most likely a split system, meaning there is an inside and outside unit. The outside unit’s job is to disperse heat from the Freon so it can cool down and absorbs more heat from your home’s air.
But if the unit is dirty or smothered by a bush, it has trouble dispersing the heat from the Freon, meaning your air conditioner will have trouble cooling your home.
The outside unit should be cleaned once a year. And many AC service company will clean it as part of an annual maintenance visit.
Is your AC still not cooling well?
If your AC still isn’t cooling your home well, then it may need more Freon or there is another issue that’s causing the problem.
If you’re low on Freon that means there’s also a refrigerant leak that needs repairing.
If you hear a hissing or bubbling noise coming from the AC, that means the refrigerant leak is very large and needs repairing ASAP.
